Welles Hits Cambridge This Weekend Supporting Dead Sara And New Record Red Trees and White Trashes

There’s something astoundingly familiar about Welles’ Red Trees and White Trashes. Like this delightful hybrid of Neutral Milk Hotel and Queens of the Stone Age, the kind of music found within is this truly great sonic journey that treks through Americana with a sort of fuzzed out folk complete with electric bluesy styles and big beats.

In other words, Welles’ debut is pretty frelling phenomenal.

From the moment “How Sweet It Is To Love” kicks in and even more so when “Into Ashes” plunges listeners even deeper into Welles’ sonic journey, you’ll know you made the right choice by choosing to check out this album. “Codeine” is bombastically blissful while “Rock N Roll” has a sped up cadence in tune with QOTSA’s “Make It Wit Chu”.

“Hold Me Like I’m Leaving” is a mid-tempo fuzzy blues rawker with Jesse Wells echoing his guitar work vocally with these impassioned wails. And what album would be complete without the inclusion of an interlude of some sort? On Red Trees…, the aptly titled “Interlude” just rawks the eff out for barely a minute before “Crush 19”, ahem, crushes it even more in the rawk department.

“Life Like Mine” is another unexpected genre-crossing ditty, experimenting with psychedelia and accenting strong songwriting powers from Welles. Penultimate “Summer” quiets things down with a mostly acoustic number which builds to an almost symphonic glow and leads into “9.8” to close Red Trees… out in a fittingly rawkin’ fashion.

Red Trees and White Trashes is out now through 300 Entertainment and you can get yours by clicking here or here. Welles is currently out on the road supporting Dead Sara with a stop at Middle East this Saturday, September 22nd. For all the deets on that and more, head on over here.
