While Underwing might already be the Desert Rawk, Grunge, Prog hybrid you didn’t know you needed in your life, they might also be onto something wholly original with their unique blending and melding of styles. Listening through “House On Fire”, their latest single and video, and the only artist that remotely comes close to what they’re doing is He Is Legend…and that only holds true for bits and pieces of the track. But whatever genre you’d like to tie them down to, there’s no denying that what Underwing has created here is undeniably infectious and persistently timeless.
But I digress.
Underwing’s latest video and song are similarly epic and should give fans all the right feels. It’s not just that rumbling Prog-leaning bass lines or the sick guitar work from Magnus Christiansen or the way that Enyeto Kotori crafts words in these raspy, broad ways alone that makes the song brilliant, it’s when you put them all together as they head towards a massive chorus that makes all of “House On Fire” one big “You complete me” moment for sure. Tack on some frenetic, speedy frenzy to highlight Joachim Walle Michalsen’s mastery of the drums before another dose of that gorgeous chorus and you have a song that’s the total package of Rawk. That energy and excitement continues to buzz and spills over into the visual accompaniment which is weird and wonderful in its’ own way melding Horror and Sci-Fi (Think Midnight Special meets The Last House On The Left) for a stunning scene that fits the aural artistry that serves as the soundtrack.
