What’s In A Name? Yur Mum Lay It All Out Within Rollickin’ Ellipsis

As the punchline to many a joke around the RNRF homestead, it’d be silly to think that when a band with a name like “Yur Mum” comes across our request desk they wouldn’t get the attention they so rightly and obviously deserve from us.

But I digress.

If “Sweat Shop” was your first introduction to Yur Mum as was the case for us, then you are in for a TREAT with what the rest of Ellipsis has to offer. Sure, this lead single is contagious in the way it hurtles a barrage of pummeling beats from Fabio Couto and staccato riffs at listeners as lead screamer Anelise Kunz alternates between barking and beautifully delivered choruses guaranteed to cause involuntary sing-a-longs. But what comes before and after is even more fun.

“What Do You Want” opens up the EP and comes at listeners like a sonic sledgehammer with Kunz’s commanding pipes and a plethora of style changes throughout. Part Grunge. Part Doom. Part Sludge. If Liela Moss fronted Toadies or Tad but made riffs that could strip paint like Crowbar can and you might have an inkling of what you’re getting into with Yur Mum.

The title track is a banger with Kunz’s call and response refrain giving us all the chills as it settles into a stellar groove and the riffs create a wall of sound like something from the Zakk Wylde-era of Ozzy while Kunz’s bass signals the start of “Rotten” before a flurry of riffs swirl around as she trades her screams for a soothing, bluesy approach. Aptly titled closer “Closure” offers some, ahem, closure to the EP with Kunz continuing the clean vocal approach during this intricate, brilliantly crafted EP ender that’s a glimpse of what’s on the horizon from Yur Mum.
