Noise rock has found its new voice in Leeds-based Super Luxury who, on Ten Solid Years of Applause, deliver eleven solid tracks of pure cacophonous perfection.
But first things first. You wanna rope me into your new release? Plaster Mr. Daryl Hall & John Oates on your album cover and have a song that is waaaaaay too long to reproduce here (Or not: “Ian Mackaye made so much money out of Fugazi that he lives in a solid gold house and drives a solid gold car and he sits on his driveway but he can’t go anywhere because the wheels are made of solid gold”) and you’ll pique my interest before I even listen to a note.
Once you listen, though, you’ll be instantly pulled in. Whether it’s the explosive low end crunch that opens “25 Metres”, the jarring sting of closer “Crunchy Boy”, or something in between, there will be no doubt that Super Luxury definitely bring the noise on their latest.
If you’re looking for something a little more melodic, though, Super Luxury have that too! Try on “Constant Delicious” with its catchy guitar lines rocking below the ear-piercing screams or “Kellogg’s Wasps” which is a big ole sing-a-long hidden behind a wall of sound. Then there’s the aforementioned “Ian Mackaye…” which is a veritable thrash-fest at times with some Angus Young playing surf rock meanderings thrown in for good measure. “Golden Climbing”, meanwhile, is a droning mess of feedback and drum bashing that hearkens to the early days of Nirvana. Elsewhere, “Milk Sauce” is a fist pumping anthem, “Amasia” is a short, concise slab of rawk with harrowing screams, and “Hyberhidrosis” and “Drunk on Power” are both fueled by razor sharp riffage.
