The world of Spiritease/Jules Cohen is sort of indescribable and that’s the absolute beauty of it. Elements of Electro and World mesh seamlessly with Hip-Hop and Trip-Hop and forge a path towards fresh, yet to be labeled genres.
“My Baby’s Gone” draws listeners in with a more traditional guitar riffin’ before a flurry of vocal samples gives way to the meat and potatoes of the track which is built on loops and beats and bleeps and boops. The title track adds some jazzy elements when the piano comes in and almost serves as an interlude before “Lil’ Girl” comes swooping in with Asian influences and hip-hop beats merging into a new style.
“NYC Now” is just gorgeous, sitting atop a singular loop and building and broadening the already lush musical palette that Cohen has brought to the table…and just when you’re really feeling the groove, the sonic rug is pulled from under you as it fades into the ether and this UNKLE-like ditty, as well as the rest of the aural ecstasy you’ve just experienced, is gone.
