It’s too early to have a “Song Of The Year”, right? How about “Song Of The Year” contender? Because Lowell’s Tysk Tysk Task just upped the game and their game considerably with what they’re about to drop.
Honestly, we can’t think of a better way to kick off 2024 than with new music from one of the most fascinating artists to emerge from New England in recent years. Whether it’s the stage presence and art direction or the overall mystique adhered to the sounds and sights, there’s no denying the allure that Tysk Tysk Task has and with “Intolerable” it’s as if they’ve emerged from another sort of chrysalis with a new line up that’s refined the TTT sound. And then some.
Former Paper Tigers drummer Ben “Cutty” Cuthbert, who added a new dynamic to many a 2023 Tysk Tysk Task performance including filling in during both of TTT’s Rock & Roll Rumble shows, adds his signature heft (Have you heard Charmer yet???) to “Intolerable” with Matt Graber handling the drum duties going forward. That’s right! Those aforementioned “new” players! There’s Kyle Griffin on bass who’s an immediate presence while on second guitar is Rick Martel to accompany vocalist/guitarist Samantha Hartsel on a track that, if we were to compare, has airs of both Mistle Thrush and Lauren Lakis’ more haunting ditties.
Sonically, “Intolerable” is a vastly different beast than what’s come before. Cuthbert’s steady sticks create a solid foundation with Griffin’s bass swelling like waves in the ocean. Martel and Hartsel’s guitars intertwine almost effortlessly to create a spectral glow with Hartsel, who had already been quite the commanding presence behind the mic, ascending to siren-like status with the performance here.
