Singles! The Only Humans, “Penelope, Just Before the Dawn”

Oh hey! It’s another artist that’s been sitting in our queue (Read: in an open tab to edit amongst many, many, MANY open tabs across ye olde laptop) that we’re finally finishing our initial post on despite listening to over and over again. The good thing is that “Penelope, Just Before the Dawn” from The Only Humans is now out for your earholes to take in with the bad being just that we were too slow to bring you the news earlier.

If you’ve ever yearned for the Dashboard Confessional’s or Modest Mouse’s (Modest Mice???) of today with a dash of Neutral Milk Hotel and Old 97’s thrown in for good measure and just a little bit of added SPICE to top it all off (Talking the band SPICE because violins not the culinary delight… although the music The Only Humans cook up definitely has that aspect down as well) then you’ve come to the right place when checking out Boston’s The Only Humans. Made up of Tim Howd, Neil Morrissey, Renée Gauthier, Kyle Rossi, and Lillian Edith Martin (Fatigue!!!), the 5-piece tackle the other side of The Odyssey with a focus on the wife of Odysseus on a clever song and an even more cleverer video treatment from director Pete DeBarros with the titular Penelope (Played by Madaline Falcone) navigating the world of online dating in the hopes of finding someone who lives up to her idea of an ideal partner with her current one being long lost.

Poignant prose (Sample lyric: “I don’t know which god is the right one to pray to/I hope one of them gets back to me someday”) from vocalist & songwriter Howd permeate throughout the lush textures created from Rossi’s electric guitars (With Howd on acoustic), Gauthier’s bass, Martin’s drumming, and Morrissey’s violin (Plus backing vocals from Jacalynn Manning and piano/melodica accompaniment from Elio DeLuca) which only serve to accent the alternative take on the classic Greek opus and we can’t think of a better way to be introduced to the mainstay Boston quintet if you’ve never had the pleasure before.

“Penelope, Just Before the Dawn” is out now and available for you to stream and/or download when you head here. For more from The Only Humans, including upcoming tour dates and then some, follow them across the interwebs by clicking here, here, or here.
