Singles! The Magic City, “Roadrunner Vs. Your Mother”

Single art design by David Jackel

It really is quite rare these days to find a band/artist who have developed a sound that’s unlike anything currently on the market but that’s where we find ourselves today as we chat at you about The Magic City.

As an aside and as someone who still uses the phrase “Your Mom” or “Your Mother” regularly, the title alone gave us a chuckle. Then there’s that dual meaning of “Roadrunner”! Are we talking animated Looney Tunes cartoon character? Or an ode to Jonathan Richman/The Modern Lovers cuz, y’know, Boston. Regardless, clever!

Then there’s the actual song to talk about which is a dynamic debut from a collective comprised of members of Reverse, The Daylilies, The Daily Pravda, and Graveyard of the Atlantic. On rhythm guitar and vocals, David Jackel states that the sound of The Magic City’s first single draws from “Beatles circa Rubber Soul, Pixies, Pulp, and Auteurs” and while we can definitely hear those influences we’ll raise you some early Phantom Planet and one more: Andrew Lloyd Webber! Bear with us, okay? Because “The Phantom Of The Opera” is all up in this with the sweeping, broad melodies during the main verses. Which we think is rad.

Anyway! Beyond that, The Magic City hints at their anthemic qualities early on with the slick build up to a lush chorus that’s utterly mesmerizing as Jackel adopts an almost sunny disposition in contrast to The Daily Bravda’s more subdued approach. TDP bandmate Adam Anderson similarly shines on lead guitar with some serious soloing that should excite fans on what’s to come while Mike Quinn on bass and synths and drummer Ken Marcou deliver some debonair rhythm section synchronicity for their first outing together.

“Roadrunner Vs. Your Mother” arrives on November 17th and you can be the first to hear it when you tune into The Magic City via their socials by heading here, here, or here. Those are also the spaces to watch for more information on The Magic City’s upcoming show at The Jungle in Somerville on December 17th!
