Ahead of their live debut on February 28th at ONCE Ballroom in Somerville, Boston’s Stormstress has unveiled their debut single that’s sure to appease fans of their former outfit Flight of Fire as well as Rawk fans hungry for some fresh, original material with some kick.
While pretty goddamn incomparable to what’s out there today, “Paint The Mask” could be summed up best to the uninitiated as what it would sound like if The Runaways and The Misfits took their very best bits and formed a supergroup. Drummer Maddie May Scott lays down solid grooves that are thunderous yet eloquent while Tanya Venom and Tia Mayhem unleash a guitar and bass assault that’s got all the hefty riffing and fiery solos that are sorely missing from today’s Rawk scene.
Besides the bare bones of it all, Stormstress succeeds with “Paint The Mask” because of all the subtleties within that make the track really stand out. There’s synths and strings underneath it all that give the song an epic sheen and overall unearthly quality while at the forefront the vocals are both anthemic and haunting, especially with the layered choruses and melodies that head towards the conclusion.
