“Boston Rock” is a hard thing to pin down as, like the city, it’s this hybrid amalgamation of styles thrown together. And you don’t really have to look any further than some local legends like Modern Lovers, The Cars, or The J. Geils Band to get that all encapsulating vibe that’s been the blueprint since. Picking up those plans and running with it is Boston quartet Speedfossil who, on new single “Sweetheart”, add their own flair and a dynamic concept for the EP it’s apart of.
The brainchild of singer/songwriter Garret Vandermolen, Speedfossil is following up 2022’s full-length NO ANESTHESIA album with a pair of EP’s throughout 2024 to be collected later in the fall for a vinyl release. You can already get Room With A VU, Vol. 1 featuring “Sweetheart” which not only boasts the talents of Vandermolen on vocals, guitars, and keys, drumming by Chris Walsh, Michael Scotti on bass and vocals, and Dan Jordan on guitar and vocals but also The Chelsea Curve’s Linda Bean Pardee on guest vocals! As for the song itself, it’s a righteous blend of sugary potpourri Power Pop and Rawk in the vein of those aforementioned Boston bands with airs of Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five, and The Replacements (Coincidentally, co-producer/engineer David Minehan worked with the Paul Westerberg-fronted legends later in their career) as well.
“Sweetheart” is out now on all your favorite DSP’s through Sonic Escort as part of the Room With A VU, Vol. 1 EP which you can get by heading here or here (Plus a video that can be viewed below).
