Singles! Otto Kinzel, “Somewhat Damaged” (Nine Inch Nails Cover)

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Surprise music is the best music! That said, Otto Kinzel shocked the music world as he released an unexpected new track this week….well, maybe pleasantly surprised fans of his previous solo releases (You can read our takes on those here), his work in Dust Prophet, and more is probably the more accurate statement.

But I digress!

The new music in question happens to be a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Somewhat Damaged”, originally on 1999’s The Fragile. Kinzel’s version is a different kind of bleak with acoustic guitars at the forefront with Dust Prophet’s Marc Brennan laying down the steady, metronome-like percussive pulses as Danielle Elizabeth Barkman provides some sinister synth support.

And with each previous release, Kinzel is yet again proving to be quite the diverse vocalist delivering a schizophrenic performance here and channeling Mike Patton at his absolute best with a Honky Tonk twang one moment, a hushed yet tense delivery the next, and building towards an impassioned scream later on.

“Somewhat Damaged” is available now as a free download digital single over on Bandcamp. Speaking of Bandcamp! This Friday (March 20th) is also the day that Bandcamp will be waiving their revenue share on sales so that artists can be supported during this global crisis (Read: Spend some money on the rest of his stuff here and here this Friday between midnight to midnight Pacific time).
