I don’t like KISS, okay? They just never did it for me for some reason. Much like choosing Megadeth over Metallica and Priest over Maiden, my general “meh” towards all things KISS will not win me any fans/new followers. HOWEVER! I’m a recent convert to the ways of the Fozzy and enjoy the hell out of Chris Jericho in the squared circle so, for me, hearing a cover of a song that I’ve never heard in the first place with Le Champion on vocals is pretty friggin’ groovy.
And that’s not to discount the overall contributions of KISS to RAWK. Do I get “Rock And Roll All Nite” stuck in my head on occasion? Of course! I’m human after all. What I’m reiterating here is that KISS just ain’t my thang. But kickass covers like this are just the kind of push non-believers like myself need to take a leap of faith. For today, though, we’ll stick with just the cover of “No No No”.
Take Luke Bryan’s drummer, the bassist from Trixter, the guitarist from a KISS cover band, a former Dancing With The Stars competitor and focus solely on the ’80’s era of KISS without the iconic facepaint while living in quarantine and you have a smorgasbord of talent that is just kooky enough to work. Because it does. There’s heavy shredding and rip-roarin’ solos from Joe McGinness, PJ Farley’s foundation-rockin’ low end, Kent Slucher’s pummeling (Think Priest’s “Painkiller”) and the maestro himself, Chris Jericho with his distinct and commanding wail to bring it all together. Like I said, It’s enough to compel the most staunch non-believer to dive into KISS’ extraordinary discography.
