Singles! blindspot, “Upside Down”

Boston’s blindspot return with a fabulous slab of uplifting Alt that’s sure to whet your appetites for what’s to come when they drop a brand spankin’ new EP in 2020. But in the meantime, fans will be treated to “Upside Down” which sees the band propelled to new sonic heights on a song that has the songwriting maturity that contemporaries like PVRIS or Paramore wish they had at this stage in their career.

But I digress.

Didja hear blindspot’s last single “All I Am”? Cuz we did and we loved it so we reviewed it (Read it here). That said, “Upside Down” is a whole new level from a band that is constantly astounding the masses as this pulsating package of plucky percussive beats highlights a whole new side of blindspot. It’s ’80’s tinged for sure but it’s almost like Gwen Stefani went back in time to front Flock Of Seagulls (Stay with me here) as this Electro groove monster pulsates and effortlessly treads New Wave territory (Think Duran Duran and Notorious in particular).

The secret weapon here is Alexa Economou who can thread the needle perfectly to channel Stefani’s early brashness and Simon Le Bon’s bravado and sneer to make this incredible hybrid that’s truly indescribable and a beautiful amalgamation of genres. Basically, its the kind of tune the sometimes stale music industry desperately needs right now.

Actually there’s two secret weapons because multi-instrumentalist Chris Cormier is the best kind of partner to Economou, adding to the sonic palette with programmed perfection and this spacey orchestral swell towards the conclusion of “Upside Down” that really takes the track into a new stratosphere of excellence.

And a third secret weapon (Okay, we get it, there’s a lot of secret weapons in blindspot) are the visuals within the video for “Upside Down” which seem super simple but, in reality weave a complex web of thought provoking visuals that highlight Cormier and Economou’s chemistry and musical prowess. It also reminds us of a Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins classic from the ’80’s so there’s that, too.

“Upside Down” will be released on September 13th! Stay tuned to the socials here and here to find out where you can get yours AND for the most up-to-date dates for where you can see the band live next. Like the single/video release party at Middle East in Cambridge with Baabes, Exit 18, and Driip on September 13th (Specific details for that are here) as well as at the Boston Local Music Festival on September 28th.
