Singles! Bird Language, “Heartbreak Summertime”

It must be something in the air (Or maybe something in that “Dirty Water”?) because it seems to us like there’s a wealth of acton starting up again from a lot of the artists featured in this year’s Rock & Roll Rumble. To name a few, Paper Tigers just dropped a new single ahead of an upcoming full-length, Kooked Out just unveiled a cassette version of their most recent record, and soon Gretchen Shae and the Middle Eight will be dropping a brand new track. Which brings us to another entrant in the 2023 Rumble, Bird Language, who return with their latest single and another fitting end-of-summer jam for our collective earholes.

Look, last year’s 625 Days was GREAT! It’s still a solid listen front to back and has a timeless quality that makes those return visits so rewarding. “Heartbreak Summertime”, though? DAAAAAMMNN. Spilling out of that “Rocket” cover that frequently found itself in the BL sets combined with a Dinosaur Jr. meets Hum Alt fuzziness, “Heartbreak Summertime” is a whole ‘nother animal from the Boston quintet.

According to the press release, the track “showcases their ferocious rhythm section and a penchant for riff-based noise…” and we couldn’t agree more. Andrew Doherty and Neil Simmons’ two-headed guitar monster is at the forefront to start with wailing solos throughout while Michael Nashawaty’s drumming relentlessly slams with cymbal crashes galore to offset Pat Piasecki’s driving low end rumble. As always, setting BL apart from their peers and other comparisons is vocalist/keys/piano man Jeff Nicolai whose voice here is lush and delicate but delivered with such power that it echos the instrumental bombast while still retaining that Bird Language beauty.

And if that wasn’t enough reason, “Heartbreak Summertime” also has the powerhouse team of Benny Grotto (Motherboar!) tackling recording and mixing at Mad Oak Studios along with Will Benoit (SOM! Constants!) handling the mastering at The Radar Studio.
