Singles! AshenMoon, “Dustbowl/Mosquito”

It’s immediately apparent when listening to the debut tracks from AshenMoon that something special is happening. Featuring INXS bass master Garry Beers and Juke Cartel (And former Rockstar: Supernova contestant) vocalist Toby Rand, AshenMoon combine hefty groove-based Rawk with New Wave and a fancy Pop finish to make for one of the most exciting releases of 2020.

Both Duran Duran and INXS come to mind when listening through the infectious earworm that is “Dustbowl” which sounds like what would happen if you mashed up the early days of the former with the later days of the latter. In other words, Rio and Elegantly Wasted in a blender with a healthy dose of U2’s Pop thrown in for fun. Rand’s voice is refreshing in today’s climate, transcending tropes and hitting listeners with raw emotion as he careens and croons his way through the tantalizing tapestry of sonic wonders created by Beers, guitarist Jimmy Khoury, and drummer Sebastian Gregory.

Beers’ iconic bass is at the forefront of the burgeoning “Mosquito” which presents a different side to AshenMoon. Accented by acoustic flourishes and bluesy riffs amidst a steady backbeat, the track builds to a grandiose soulful cry from Rand whose voice becomes positively heavenly when accompanied by a Gospel-style choir later on in the song.
