“Every city in America has a Massachusetts Avenue.”
How could we say no to a song about the street where our base of operations resides??? Also, let’s be real for a sec: The folks in Already Dead are true anthem makers and at this point that statement is less conjecture, more undeniable fact. So add 2 and 2 and there’s definitely no way we couldn’t take a gander/listen to “The Spirit Of Massachusetts Avenue”.
For those looking for an easy intro to the world of Already Dead, think later Social Distortion meets classic Alkaline Trio meets Against Me! with a Rancid flair for gang vox and infectious sing-a-longs (Substitute Dropkick Murphys if you want to keep it local). And it’s a sound that the band have honed over the course of one full-length and many a single and EP with the Boston-based outfit (Featuring singer/songwriter/guitarist Dan Cummings, drums by Nick Cali, guitars from Brandon Bartlett, and Brian Ferrazzani on bass) only getting better with each release.
Personally, the song resonates as we began trips into Boston around the Back Bay area in the ’90’s, later seeking out higher education on Mass Ave and then over a decade later settling on another stretch of the lengthy road and we’re sure we’re not the only ones who have similar stories not only of journeys but of observations on the diversity from end to end as Already Dead share within.
Following the song on June 12th is the video treatment from Roberto Terrones at Berto Media which sees the band performing interspersed with shots of the fabled Mass Ave and the band walking along those streets while reciting this sonic scripture (Fun fact, we once walked the Mass Ave bridge shown connecting Cambridge to Boston following a Life Of Agony show at the Middle East to get back to our dorm room as we had yet to “figure out the bus”) in some badass black and white footage.
