RoseR Is Ready To (Rock & Roll) Rumble On Steps

Lowell produces some great shit. A lot of which gets lumped into the “Boston Music Scene” that does indeed tend to encompass a lot of the MA area but ya gotta give credit where credit is due and, from our experience at least, Lowell is getting to the point where there’s a need for a “Lowell Music Scene” category brought into the convo. RoseR’s latest is another reason for that.

We last checked in with the Middlesex County quintet on their 2022 self-titled release and on their latest outing, the Steps EP, RoseR expand upon their sound and unveil the next evolution of the band with two new tracks of serene sonic ecstasy.

“Silver Bullet Linings” is a moving mass of musical ingenuity with so many kinetic connectable pieces that fit together like a puzzle but also one that demands repeated listens to appreciate it to the fullest. Did that make sense? What we’re trying to say is that the song is REALLY good. Everyone here has stepped up their game considerably beyond the “Funkified Alt-Soul” they delivered on RoseR. Vocalist Mary Dumont is a wonder with a wicked range whimsically maneuvering along with the bright rhythmic run from drummer Jared Duff and bassist Steve Sommers as guitarist Kevin Conway and keyboardist Johnny Gelsomini add layers upon layers through their instruments.

That’s not to say they’ve lost that Nu-Funk at all as “Locals” proudly displays on its’ opening drive from Duff with Gelsomini creating a lush atmosphere. Speaking of lush, howzabout that heavenly vocal line that’s akin to a hymnal running all up in this piece kind of like a Flaming Lips classic (Think Yoshimi… in particular). But that’s only a small amount of the track that’s broken up by blasts of Conway’s guitar licks and Dumont’s intrinsic voice solidifying the sounds.
