RNRF X Rock & Roll Rumble 2024: Week 1, Night 2

We made it through Night 1! Or we will. For now, we’ve just made it through the first post about the Preliminary rounds so there’s a long way to go both in our postings and in, y’know, the actual shows that have so much behind the scenes work put into them ahead of time (Thanks, Anngelle Wood and Boston Emissions among others) before bands even hit the stage. Like they will once again at Middle East Upstairs on Friday, April 5th (See what we did there???) Anyway, our purported cleverness aside let’s see what Night 2 holds:

JATK (9PM): Easing right into Night 2 of the Preliminary round is Boston’s Matt Jatkola who, as JATK, bring a steady stream of sophisticated Pop to tonight’s proceedings. Ever wished you’d seen Weezer back in their club days? Well, here ya go! JATK also bring a sort of celebratory jubilation to all they do, too, and you can hear it for yourself on stage on Night 2 and by clicking here for more.

GUT HEALTH (945PM): The first of the LOUD ones on Night 2 (But second in all caps), GUT HEALTH will be entering the fray with a fresh new song on the airwaves as “CONVERSATION LOST” will be unleashed on April 1st. We’ve heard it, a review is coming, but for now let’s focus on what IS out there and just bask in the “RUNAWAY HIGH” glow as it’s wondrous with a heavy, driving flow and an undeniably sweet chorus. You can dive in via the socials and more by heading here.

Trailer Swift (1030PM): Labeled as “Progressive Post-Punk” easily puts Boston’s Trailer Swift at the top of our pile and maybe yours, too, especially when you delve further and find elements of Alternative and modern Grunge in their sound with a track like “Cross My Heart” off ’23’s Variant on Mint 400 Records channeling both Smashing Pumpkins and Failure. And there’s so much more to explore in their sound which you can do when you head here.

Type 66 (1115PM): Closing out one of the more loud nights of the ’24 Rumble (So far!), Type 66 has an old school Boston sound straight from the mid-90’s (Sam Black Church, Cobalt 60, Stompbox) with a vocalist who’s got a deep bellow similar to Kilgore Smudge’s Jay Berndt. For now, you can listen to the raw demo of “RUN!” when you click below.

And that concludes our preview of Night 2 of the 2024 edition of the Rock & Roll Rumble which takes place at Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge on Friday, April 5th. Doors open at 8PM with a 9PM start time planned. Ticket links for all shows are located here with “Full Boat” passes for the whole shebang available here.
