Pulp Rawk: Club 42 By Joanna Angel

Much like the classic Ghostbusters quandary towards the conclusion of the film regarding answering to the affirmative when a higher power asks if you’re a god: When a choose-your-own erotic fantasy novel comes across your digital desk asking for a review…the answer is always “YES!”

We’ve covered adult entertainers teaming up with one of our most favorite Industrial artists (Sasha Grey belting out some jams with the Lord Of Lard, Raymond Watts AKA PIG, which you can read about here) in these pages so why not cover another adult entertainer exploring our most favorite medium with an erotic novel that happens to be in the style of choose-your-own-adventure?

Joanna Angel is an Adult Film icon, the Headmistress of the Alt-Porn genre, Founder of Burning Angel, producer, director, actress, purveyor of whiskey, and also; writer! Actually, Club 42 is her SECOND book but don’t worry, you don’t have to have read the first to get into the second (Although, after reading this, you may find an insatiable need to search out Night Shift which you can conveniently find here).

And speaking of the book in question!

A film student turned barista turned exotic dancer is our heroine, Naomi, in a nutshell. And it’s up to you, the faithful reader, to decide where her life goes once she happens upon the Times Square strip club known as Club 42.

Will Naomi make it as an exotic dancer? Will she prosper? Does she tell her boyfriend…does she even have a boyfriend? What will her stage name be? Does she have a stage name even? Will she explore her kinkier side? Does she want to experiment with the butt plug? Or with the strap-on? Why is Nickelback mentioned in a choose-your-own erotic fantasy novel? But, most importantly: Will she live happily ever after???

Well, that’s up to you!

Sometimes she does and sometimes she doesn’t but the above is just the proverbial, ahem, tip of the iceberg when it comes to tales to be told in the mutiverse of Naomi. I have to admit that on my first go through I tended to play it safe and my choices caused an uninterrupted dive in and a more linear tale which, in turn, caused me to jump right back in to see what else could happen.

Some stories are wrapped up in a day while others span months or more, but it’s all cleverly written from Naomi’s POV and unique voice courtesy of Angel making for an enticing, enthralling, and ultimately enjoyable read. Unless you don’t like erotic stories in which case, I’m not sure why you’re still reading this review.

Club 42 is available now through Cleis Press and Simon & Schuster at all of your favorite digital and retail outlets. You can get your very own right now by clicking here. Keep up-to-date on all things Joanna Angel by following her on the socials here and here, and head here for a more NSFW social media experience.
