From the man that brought you “The Satanist”, “Christians To The Lions”, “GOD=Dog” and more comes some music to keep fans on their toes as the sophomore album from Nergal’s Dark/Folk/Rockabilly alter ego Me And That Man arrives on March 27th.
With a distinct sound in the realm of any number of Nick Cave projects or Refused lite to an extent, Me And That Man sets themselves apart from Behemoth entirely but that’s not to say that some acquaintances of the infamous Black Metallers haven’t come along for the ride to give help in a decidedly different atmosphere. Like Shining’s Jørgen Munkeby who starts this all off during the kooky, dark rabble rouser “Run With The Devil” by bringing a bluesy bravado with his sax and vocals. Or Madrugada’s Sivert Høyem who stars in “Coming Home” which captures the frenetic rawness of early Bad Seeds. Or one of my personal faves, Matt McNerney (Grave Pleasures), who shines on the shanty-like “Burning Churches”.
And that’s just the first three tracks!
Emperor’s Ihsahn takes a turn on “By the River”, filled with organs and wailin’ solos while later “Surrender” is like a hymnal for a Black Mass with a gospel choir and chilling slide guitar work featuring Rob Caggiano of Volbeat and Dead Soul.
Banjos! Entombed! Harmonicas! Lucifer! Probably not the kind of word association you’d expect but here on New Man, New Songs, Same Shit Vol. 1 it makes perfect sense. And hey, who says the devil doesn’t need laid back kind of soundtrack? Anyway! “Deep Down South” features Lucifer’s Johanna Sadonis and Nicke Anderson of Entombed who accent a fun little ditty and further in, “Man Of The Cross” is almost, ahem spiritual in the way that Rome’s Jerome Reuter preaches his lines amidst rolling percussion and a jarring meshing of voices creating an air of creepiness.
Speaking of creepy, wait until you check out Trivium’s Matt Heafy adopting an unrecognizable baritone that has hints of Pete Steele’s iconic pipes on “You Will Be Mine” or Corey Taylor on “How Come” utilizing a bluesy swagger not even heard on the softer Stone Sour songs. “Confession” puts a lid on this casket full of dark Folk with a haunting performance from Shining SE’s Niklas Kvarforth before unexpectedly devolving into some heavier fare to once again keep the fans on their toes.
