It’s Not Night: It’s Space Bring Cerebral Heaviness To Unrelenting Our Birth Is But A Sleep And A Forgetting

SS-160cover

2016 is turning out to be a great year for the riffage. So far both Miss Lava and Gozu (To name a few standouts) have released albums schooling the kids on how to rawk properly. Not to be outdone by their peers, It’s Not Night: It’s Space’s latest is equally impressive. It’s also quite the coincidence that all three bands are either former or current members of the Small Stone Records roster.

But I digress.

There are certain albums that, when put on, are simply transcendent of other music. By the time the album is finished listeners are left wondering where the time went and, more importantly, they’re left knowing that whatever just happened was an experience they’ll never forget.

Our Birth Is But A Sleep And A Forgetting is the album in question from It’s Not Night: It’s Space and it’s a beautiful thing built of six tracks each clocking in at almost eight minutes (Except for opener “Nada Brahma”). “The Beard Of Macroposopus” truly awakens the beast and is an epic eight minute jam that thrives on the groove and the power of the riff. Like all of the tracks found here, it’s pure sonic ecstasy without those pesky words and vocals distracting listeners from the real meat and potatoes.

“Across the Luster of the Desert Into the Polychrome Hills” isn’t as intense as the opening salvo but staggers/ambles  on building to a heavy vehemence with almost anthemic Kevin Halcott driven guitar tones screaming at the heavens. “Starry Wisdom”, on the other hand, is like all the best instrumental aspects of …And The Circus Leaves Town then explodes into syncopated drum and bass fury thanks to Michael Lutomski and Tommy Guerrero respectfully.

“Pillars In The Void” simply hums, although nothing INN:IS does should ever be considered “simple”. “The Black Prison And The Palm Tree”, meanwhile, has an eerie air to it and this gorgeous Guerrero/Lutomski rhythmic sync up that only heightens Halcott’s expert lessons in riffology.

Our Birth Is But A Sleep And A Forgetting will be uncaged on June 24th through Small Stone Records. You can get yours here. For more on INN:IS, head on over here.
