Grub, Sweat And Beers 7 Preview: Day 1 (July 28th, O’Brien’s Pub)

The kick off night! The preview before the big day! The calm before the storm?? This year’s Grub, Sweat And Beers begins on Friday, July 28th and boasts a bevy of badass bands to get you pumped for the main event taking place most of Saturday the 29th. And we thought the least we could do for Year 7 (Once again spearheaded by maestros Doug Sherman, Jim Healey, and Aaron Gray) of the event is tell you about some of the bands starting your weekend off right, right??? So let’s dig in!

Groaning Wretch embodies that classic Boston Heavy sound and, for us, sounds a lot like something Carmelita would play on Bay State Rock late on Sunday night causing us to go scour the racks of the local stores to find as early as possible on the following day. Their most recent offering, 2022’s, is a nifty foray into brutal heaviness with Death Metal vocals on top of old school Hardcore breakdowns to form a sonic synergy that’s unstoppable. Get the latest by following Groaning Retch here.

Waelmist just shred. Bandcamp’s got three releases to whet yer beaks with if you weren’t already familiar and what you’ll find if you dive in ahead of their GSB performance is a unique frenetic fury coupled with the barely contained manic madness of Child Bite but with a vocalist that’s a focused force utilizing a gruff bark that’s every bit as incendiary as the instrumentals laid down throughout. And this is just describing latest single “Ravenous”! For more from Waelmist, click below or head here.

Bonginator just dropped a new release conveniently on 4/20 that’s also conveniently linked right below this writing and an all around impressive slab of Heavy Metal mayhem. Another one of the Day 1 artists who hearken back to ’90’s with their sound, Bonginator will (hopefully) bring soon-to-be classic tracks like “Zombie Party Rockers” and its’ breakdowns beyond reproach along with the thrashy fury of “Blunt Smoke Suffocation (Featuring Scab Hag, Snuffed of Sight) and more to O’Brien’s this weekend. For more from Bonginator, head here.

And then we get Bacterial Husk who is just monstrous…. you’re bringing ear protection to this, right? Those “goblin” vocals that’s all the rage with the kiddies were a thing back in 2018 when “Mystics of Transmutation” dropped fyi and elsewhere BH deliver some punishing riffs, punishing vocals, and kind of just punishing everything throughout the rest of their tunes. For more from them, head here.

All in all, you couldn’t ask for a better ease in to the marathon of music that’s headed your way this weekend. Get your tickets in advance for Night 1 now by heading here or here. Let ’em know you’re coming by heading here and follow the rest of the shreddy shenanigans here for all the rest of the pertinent deets!
