The true test of a stellar local music scene is the diversity of sounds to be found within and I might be biased because it’s my local scene but Boston is no exception. You’ve got hip-hop and an abundance of metal, folk and indie, a tiny industrial scene and even electro. Then there’s the alternative banner which covers a wide variety of local favorites.
In that field you have bands like forktie or Test Meat who bring that Nirvana-style grunge to the table and on the flip side you have a band like the artists in question today, Green Piece, who offer up some of that Midwest-style alternative (Smashing Pumpkins, hum) which often got lumped together with the Seattle scene.
Like my most favorite kind of ’90’s alt rawk, MA’s Green Piece bring the fuzzed out noise on Whatever. “Stacy’s Dad” starts in a flurry of bleeps and boops before settling into a little ditty akin to a classic by The Cars before exploding into your new favorite alt-rawk anthem on the chorus (Coincidentally, the track is their own ode to Boston rock and The Cars)
With vox that go from a whisper to an impassioned croon in a heartbeat as the drums just keep on bashing, “Stacy’s Dad” is the perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the Lowell outfit. The rest of the EP is filled out by “Secret Garden”, a glistening acoustic-based rawker in the vein of Oasis or Our Lady Peace in their heyday while “NPC”, which closes the album, will be the one that gives listeners all the Siamese Dreams feels.
