Sometimes a promo for a band that I don’t listen to on the regular comes across ye olde digital desk and I have to go back to see what I’ve covered in the past for research which often turns to regret. Regret because, more often than not and especially in the case of Dust Moth, I realize that I’m missing out an artist that is aurally awesome.
But I digress.
Dust Moth is back with a brand new full-length which also happens to be their first in almost five years! And in the time since Scale was released, Dust Moth has honed their sound to concoct easily one of their best to date. Somber, moody, and melancholic, Rising // Sailing is the sum of all its’ intricate moving parts that together conjure this collection of tunes that’s a blissful barrage of epic yet sobering soundscapes.
“Annular Eclipse” is like the ghost of Red Sparowes with a killer slide guitar from Ryan Frederiksen to start before forging its’ own path as Irene Barber’s cathartic croon blankets all, backed by an irresistible hum from Steve Becker’s bass and Jim Acquavella’s shuffling drum lines heading for a gargantuan groove to finish. “Everything Anew” is all start/stop progressive noise with Barber’s voice producing some sweet serenity as synths eloquently seep in under these wailing guitar sounds from Frederiksen which permeate into “How To Sleep” and its’ burgeoning noise that practically glistens thanks to the organ sounds.
“Other Worlds” offers a symphonic scenario and later, “Flinching” grinds and throbs and poetically pummels the senses with the way the Becker’s bass chimes in against Acquavella’s pointed percussive attacks as Barber’s voice is filled with the kind of swagger that The Duke Spirit used to do so well.
“Motor” is elegantly eerie, spooked up even more by Barber’s haunting delivery caressed by atmospheric synths and the ominous fuzz that Becker produces from the bass leading towards the hypnotic hymn of “I’m Not Anyone” which is crushing yet cleansing to close out a record that’s well worth the wait.
