Blodet Pack An Expansive Post-Metal Punch In A Small Package On Death Mother

For folks yearning for Emma Ruth Rundle to return to the sound of Marriages or wished Chelsea Wolfe lingered in the heaviness a little longer, Blodet is here for you with their latest opus entitled Death Mother. But really? They’re here to make some kickass experimental Post-Rawk noise that’s ethereal and entrancing and stands out on its’ own.

The title track is a start/stop number that’s a burgeoning seven minutes and then some of Post-something come correctedness and some certifiable serenity come to life with the vocal delivery, guitars that mesmerize and wail while the drumming swells up and down like waves crashing up against the shore. “The Hour” is a low end bringer that hounds yer earholes while it haunts the rest of your senses as the rhythm section stalks with an unnerving repeated refrain and then “Lead Me Home” settles into a nice groove early on with a big bass presence prevalent throughout on an all around unstoppable song with these exquisitely mastered machinations being wrought upon the ears in the way the song builds adding layer upon layer before simply fading away.

“Without Within” is part primal thumping and part Jim Jarmusch film score (Think Dead Man or The Dead Don’t Die) and, perhaps because we were finishing up reading on the plight of the Osage as were finishing this review, think this would nicely fit over the end credits of Killers of the Flower Moon. Well, maybe part of the credits because there is way more “Without Within” than KotFM credits we think as this close to closing track is LONG. But in a good way and almost like two or three songs in one here with an overlying ark but with several different movements fighting for dominance until the bitter end. Then “93-22” seemingly lets go of all that built up tension with a, gasp!, fun instrumental jam to end the record. And just like that, it’s done.

Death Mother arrives on September 29th through Church Road Records. Pre-orders are up now and can be perused and/or purchased by heading here. For more from Blodet, follow the trail of socials by clicking here or here.
