We looooooove supporting local artists whenever we can. We especially love supporting local artists when they make music as incendiary as BEDTIMEMAGIC do. On Pillow Talk, out on November 8th, the Boston noiseniks concoct an opus that furthers their sound and statement while simultaneously bludgeoning as many earholes as (in)humanly possible along the way.
But don’t let that scare you away! Like a mix of Unsane and old school Amphetamine Reptile artists with a smidge of Converge thrown in for good measure, Pillow Talk is a cohesive, albeit cacophonous, heaping of modern loud that you need to have in your life. The duo of Morgan Berns and Nicholas Pentabona have pared down years of releases and songs to ten piledriving tracks that punctuate the BEDTIMEMAGIC sound perfectly.
“Long Kiss Goodnight” immediately slays as Pentabona’s low end brings to mind Noise pioneers like Girls Against Boys or Fudge Tunnel and, at times, Cave In (Pillow Talk producer Andrew Schneider coincidentally has frequently worked with those Methuen metallers). Then you have Berns thrashing about on the percussive end of things and everything just synchs up magically.
“Old Mattress” barely lets listeners catch their breath as this less than a minute rager is in and out before you know it and then “Hospital Corners” is upon us with its’ infectious stomping. “Dirty Sheets” has a little Converge DNA within while “Guest Cot” is epic simply because it’s the only track here to exceed four minutes in length… and also because this barrage of drum batterings from Berns at the song’s conclusion is so concise and repetitive it’ll have listeners checking that their listening device isn’t fucked up.
“Wake-Induced Lucid Dreaming (W.I.L.D.)” is a series of staccato attacks akin to mini explosions being set off, “Snore Snore Snorer” is a saucy slab of sludge, and “Warm Milk” has these moments of melodic clarity in between bouts of absolute (controlled) chaos. Penultimate ditty “Endless Slumber” is built on a swirling groove and a flurry of delightful dissonance to lead into “Waking Dream” which closes out Pillow Talk in a scream rather than a whimper with Pentabona’s bass sounding positively vibrant as Berns’ crashes signal the end of the album.
