Answerman Tread A Fine Line Between Garage Rawk, Psych Rawk, And More On Black Light Poster

You’d think with the amount of posts we’ve had covering Answerman the last month or so we’d be sick of hearing them….but that’s where you’d be wrong because more Answerman is never a bad thing and, as lovers of the old school full-length release schedule versus a continuous stream of singles, we’ll take a collection of new music from an artist over one and done any day of the week.

But I digress.

We did cover the one-two Black Light Poster punch of “Black Heart” and “No Complaints” previously and, within the context of the record, they sound even better. Opener “Black Heart” is a jangly throwback with a clashing of Mod and Psych Rawk that’s pretty frelling refreshing in this day and age while “No Complaints” is a little more straight forward Rawk after a rousing Chris Orcutt drum performance

“Smoof” just exudes cool. Like, in an Austin Powers psychedelic ’60’s/’70’s kind of way while also ensnaring Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and David Bowie (That guitar line to start gives off some heavy “The Man Who Sold The World” feels) into the mix as Sam Pitino and Tom Murphy’s guitars playfully play off each other throughout. “Prophet” is a gnarly ditty that moves with Walt Enright’s bass rumble rattlin’ yer bones for this Wall of Voodoo meets The Raveonettes suave-fest and then “Jenny” is even better than that with Murphy taking over the mic with a commanding yet still laid back vocal delivery bringing a veritable earworm with the cadence and patterns built here.

“The Trick” is actually the first slowdown here… and it only took six tracks to do so! Still an upbeat number that’s kind of reminiscent of Dire Straits circa Brothers In Arms, “The Trick” glistens and glows before “Trampled” brings the party back to life with a psych-soaked, lava light-worshipping rawker. It all comes to a head, and an inevitable end, on the truly riotous “Background” which is built from Orcutt’s constant pelting of the skins, Enright’s unrelenting bass tones, and Murphy and Pitino’s dueling guitars careening towards the eventual end where the winner is you, the listener, having experienced what you just experienced with the ability to start the process over again with the simple push of a button.
